ReplyDeleteWow, this episode was full of jams! I dropped everything and had an impromptu solo dance party when that Robocop track kicked it up.
ReplyDeleteThat Journey to Silius performance was AWESOME. We hadn't heard it before. As a former member of marching bands and pep bands, I can see how that tune would kill at basketball games.
As far as Dig Dug's request goes, the first thing that came to mind was "Epilogue ~ Beautiful Hyrule" from A Link to the Past. Very beautiful and regal. The second was Gym Theme from the Pokémon Game Boy games, but specifically the Gold/Silver version because it has percussion. To me there is perhaps no track that is more confident, celebratory, and triumphant.
Also, to The Switch: I hope I didn't come across as a sleuthing jerk! That tune is amazing and I'm personally glad two versions of it made it into the podcast.

DeleteUtopianemo here. I'm guessing you guys didn't pick up on the fact that the Robocop track starts out with the full theme from the movie. It goes beyond a full phrase. It's a shame, too, because the rest of the song is pretty Bonk.

ReplyDeleteSo about the Top Gear track.....There's a really good episode of the Pixelated Audio podcast(http://www.pixelatedaudio.com/horizon-chase-barry-leitch/) where they actually get to interview him. So based on that interview, I can add the following: His name is pronounced "leech", and I'm almost positive he was the sole composer. Kemco farmed out the game to Gremlin on account of their work on the Lotus games. Leitch had a ridiculously short time to compose the tracks, and Kemco didn't provide them with any sort of dev kit. When Gremlin approached Kemco about the lack of any music support(the music dev kits were something like $25,000 at the time), they gave Leitch a few samples from their library and that was it. I believe that's the only reason why Masuno's name is in the credits, although he could have done sound effect design; I don't know. Leitch ended up having to recycle some of his tracks from the Lotus series as a result of the short lead time, and that's why the Top Gear tracks use very few instruments. They really sound amazing, given that information.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, that same episode of Pixelated audio features a new game Leitch composed for called Horizon Chase. It's a retro-feeling racing game for mobile phones that was developed by a Brazilian dev house that grew up with a fanatical love for Top Gear. Apparently it's a popular game down there.

ReplyDeleteMarch- How about Contra 3's "No Man's Land"? It's the last stage song which has a military style percussion that pumps you up to reach and defeat the final boss.
As for the Ceremonial song- Yoko Shimomura's "Live for Live" from Live A Live's soundtrack? A beautiful and epic song.

ReplyDeleteregarding Dig Doug's request: Knight Rider's ending theme always makes me feel like I am graduating. I'm not sure if it's a march, but I can imagine marching drums in it.

DeleteGramTracker here, Keyglyph, you and I are on the same page. DigDug, Beautiful Hyrule has a lot to offer in a simple arrangement. I'd highly recommend you checking that out. There's ample opportunity for big brass and wistful woodwinds. It instills pride and triumph with pangs of melancholy, so fitting for a graduation.

ReplyDeleteRegarding Dig Dug's question, I would suggest the main theme from the Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest) series. I think it has the kind of regal march sound that would work quite nicely at a graduation. My wife and I strongly considered working it into our wedding ceremony music.

DeleteIn regards to Batman vs. Robin, it happened...kind of. Spoiler alert. One of Batman's Robins "dies" only to return as the Red Hood and he fights against Batman. I'm sure it will be made into a movie in 2021.
