Episode 178: Free Play 30

Soccer and other stuff -that's the unofficial theme of Episode 178.  Rob decides to present only soccer/football related tracks while Brent keeps the options more varied.  Should LMH start naming the episodes based on what the boys talk about, rather than just naming it "Free Play", since they're all pretty much free plays these days?  Voice your opinion in the comments section.  Full track listing below.

  1. I like the idea of having fun titles for the Free Play episodes! The only downside I see is future confusion with non-Free Play episodes. But that's as simple as mentioning it in the episode description.

  2. That Racing Hero track was so pumped out! It made me feel like i could do ANYTHING.

  3. I agree! I think it would be a fun way to rename the free play episodes. But it is also good to know that the episode is a free play as well. So maybe something like "FP 178: F. Switch's Football & Soccer"

Wow, Metal Storm for the Famicom is going for a higher price on eBay than the NA version right now. That's a first for me to see, since usually the JP counterparts to a NA version of the game is cheaper.

This Akagawa Jirou no Yuurei Ressha track is so good! My favorite in this episode. The super minimal and relaxing Aerobiz track coming in at a close second. Thank you for another great episode!!!

  4. A few good titles in this episode:
    "Flirting with Victory"
    "The Right Amount of Everything"
    "Foxy Knows"

Thanks for mentioning your spawncast, The VGM Jukebox. Here's a link to that episode you were talking about>

Keyglyph and I are super grateful to this community for your support and song recommendations. Hope to see everybody there!

  5. I think naming episodes would be cool if there are going to be only free play episodes from now on. I would have named this episode Soccer and Sensibility. Great episode as always!!!

  6. I synced pitbull's performance with "attack of the barbarian"

I suppose that video won't last forever, but it's pretty good!

  7. If you are going to do a typical themed episode (i.e., running and jumping), I would like to still see those named as such. If it is free play, I like the idea of naming them differently, kindof like how Griffin mentions above.

As a side note, I subscribe on itunes, and each episode cuts off the description with the boilerplate "The Legacy Music Hour was created by Brent Weinbach and Rob F. specifically for the purpose of talking about..." Since I'm a subscriber, episode specific information would be appreciated more than information I am already aware of.

    Keep up the good work!

  8. Listen to that Earth Defense Force track at the end again, and think of the Brinstar music from Metroid.

I'm in favor of non-generic names for the Free Play episodes; they would make the episodes more distinguishable without the need to view the description. Besides, the count is off because of giving the same number (with .1, .2, etc.) to the FPs that led up to a Year in Review episode. But I'd be fine with a compromise with the titles and FP numbers.

  9. The Intro music from Pro Moves Soccer sounded like something Goblin would've done for a Dario Argento film circa 1981. It reminds me of the music of Zombi, a synth band whose work is very reminiscente of the Works of Goblin and Fabio Frizzi.

  10. Totally on board with renaming Free Play episodes. Can't wait for the next one.

  11. Yep, I'm for renaming Free Play episodes as well.

Awesome Pitbull + Barbarian vid, too

  12. Dig Doug, your band was so awesome! I admire all the hard work that went into scoring the piece and teaching it to your students (and of course their own hard work in learning it and playing it).

Thanks for sharing the recording with us!

It also just occurred to me that the procession was probably like watching the longest overworld character party parade ever. Haha. Did they all turn on crisp right angles?

  13. I recognized the Pro Moves Soccer track as Jesper Kyd based on its similarity to the Adventures of Batman and Robin track Rob played in the episode before he moved to Portland.

Something I realized was that although both tracks have the driving, forceful sound of later Genesis music, the percussion is synthesized rather than sampled. Nice work, Mr. Kyd!

  14. I love how casually Brent mentions obtaining one of the most rare and expensive NES games out there. I'd love to know how on Earth he got a hold of it.

  15. That Pro Moves Soccer track sounds so incredibly demoscene, which makes a lot of sense as Jesper Kyd was part of the Amiga demoscene. I can imagine geometry bouncing around the screen to this track. Awesome track.

  16. Pitbull as a Streets of Rage boss is hilariously on the money. I can imagine him as the big bad of a Latin nightclub level.

  17. I think I've found out the composer for this track: The Blue Marlin - unknown - Ending - Hot-B - NES - 1992. I just love this track.

The Composer seems to be Michiya Hirasawa, http://vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php/Michiya_Hirasawa and it is also stated here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71sqsFNcAls

    1. Thing is, he mainly worked as a programmer, so his role on that game might not have been as a composer. It seems like he probably worked on the game, but it's unsure in what capacity.
