Episode 181: Game Grumps

Brent and Rob are joined once again by Dan Avidan (having appeared two episodes ago) and this time, by Arin Hanson as well, for the full Game Grumps package.  Arin and Dan host the video game playthrough web series Game Grumps and start this episode off with some Mame That Chune-esque action, leaving Brent and Rob feeling a bit inadequate as video game music connoisseurs, but perhaps you, the users, may fare better than the boys.  Also, just in time for Halloween, Brent, Rob, Arin, and Dan share scary stories to help set the mood of the month.  Time Lord.  Full track listing below.

  1. I'm changing my handle once more because of this episode. I've gone from AndyBlankJones to Quality, and now, Ms. Ecco. If my name were Jimmy, it absolutely would have been Time Lord Jimmy, no doubt.

I love the idea of Alan Thicke arriving at a Los Angeles recording studio to pick up his son. Talk about getting sonned! Even more than that, I am loving the Skeleton Crew tracks. Gonna dig into that soundtrack right now and get in the Halloween mood.

  2. One of my friends told me that if you're a host on a video game podcast, and you make lots of jokes at the Time Lord's expense, on the next Halloween that comes after that, all of your trick-or-treaters... will be copies of Time Lord.

(Seriously, somebody please dress up as a Time Lord cartridge for Halloween this year. PLEASE.)

I loved the spin on the Ecco Jr. lore, but the title actually means "Ecco for babies," not so much "Ecco's progeny." You play as young Ecco (although there are other characters too), and the game was specifically designed to be an experience a parent/guardian would share with a child too young to properly play regular video games. There's even a "Parent's Options" menu in it, which allows settings to be changed to make the game even friendlier to the teeniest of tiny gamers.

It's a neat concept. It allows kids to sidestep a lot of frustration and frees them up to simply enjoy having agency in a video game -- and not have to worry about timers or dying or other such stresses -- even when their motor skills still stink. Plus, the manual has coloring pages and connect-the-dots in it. That's pretty cute.

Basically, Ecco Jr. is what everyone THOUGHT they were getting when they played the first Ecco game. If you spent a really long time swimming around in that tranquil first stage before everything went off the rails, you'll like Ecco Jr. It's a relaxing game for a rainy day, or for when you have the flu.

  3. The Time Lord influence, it's in everything in your day to day life. You aren't even aware what you do in your life, but you can always attribute it back to Time Lord.

  4. That track wasn't the first level of Batman, it was level 2... Does Rob not have the tracks labelled???

    1. Thats correct- level one is the iconic track "Streets of Gotham". Also found on the PC Engine game- but heavily compressed.

Boys looks like you'll be playing Time Lord for a while...- Slick Vic

    2. If you have the Famicom version of Batman then it is indeed the first level music. Don't know why Sunsoft swapped the BGMs of the first and second levels in the U.S. version.

    3. Look, if they are going to say rye-you instead of re-you, then that's the level 2 music.

  5. Brent getting some deep feelings upon hearing the next track will be a golf game at around 59 mins into the podcast made me laugh so hard. I love that I'm listening to a podcast where a guy hears that the next track is from a "golf simulation video game" and that's his response. It was my response too.

  6. DISCLAIMER: READ WHILE LISTENING TO SKELETON KREW.
One day, October 1st 1990 specifically, I was at home alone watching Terminator (the first one because the second one wasn't out yet, otherwise I would have been watching the second one). The doorbell rings. I thought it was rather unusual that someone wanted something so late at night but I answered it anyway. No one. "Great," I thought "some little miscreants are playing ding dong ditch and it's not even Halloween yet." I close the door, mildly annoyed. I go back to my room to finish watching the movie and right there, on my tv screen, TIME LORD.
    -music starts to fade out-
The scariest part, I don't even own a NES...

  11. Well my relisten to the entire podcast is almost finished now. This was the first episode I heard, and I haven't looked back since, keep up the great work boizzz!

Woah, Arin sounds so different on this, I almost didn't recognize him. It also weirds me out how much Dan's voice sounds like my older brother; probably why I warmed up to him quickly.
