It’s that time of the year again.  Brent and Rob share their top ten tracks of the year (Episodes 193 through 204).  To refresh you with the rules, tracks chosen must be pieces of video game music they became aware of only within the last year and that were played on the show.  See if you can guess which tracks were chosen!  Partial track listing below.

  3. Man, what an episode! Every song had its own bit of nostalgia to it, yabba dabba yabba dabba doo.

Other World 1 from YU-NO for Saturn is nice, but the track I originally told Rob about, Other World 2 from the PC-9801, is much better. You guys should really consider doing either a Japanese PC episode, or specific episodes about each one. The Japanese computers of the mid 80’s-mid 90’s used audio chipsets similar to what was used in arcades and home systems during the same time. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ebZbf1klGP0

Wolf Team, for example, started out doing X68000 games, and a lot of their early Genesis games were just ports of computer stuff they’d done. Ryu Umemoto, who composed the original YU-NO music, was more prolific on NEC’s PC-9801 than all but the busiest console composers, was a master of FM synthesis. LMH would find much in his work to appreciate.

    1. I tried leaving a comment earlier today on my phone about YU-NO and Ryu Umemoto but it didn't appear! You beat me to all the good stuff about Umemoto. The first time I met Brent I wasn't a User yet, but I was aware of the podcast and mentioned Umemoto to him. The articles on HG101 about Ryu Umemoto are stellar. RIP to him. I uploaded this to YouTube a while back:

I also used it in a skate video which I gave to the LMH boizz at the live podcast in Salem, haha. I want to make a Umemoto mixtape for LMH one of these days! Maybe we could collab, haha

    2. Hey Mike, I’d totally collab on a mixtape for LMH with you! Hit me up at utopianemo [at] hotmail [dot] com.

BTW, everybody, the XVGM Radio podcast just put out a Ryu Umemoto tribute episode that I’m listening to RIGHT NOW. Give it a listen, or better yet, check out VGMrips.net and do a search on his stuff.

    3. Yeah, Umemoto's stuff is excellent. Hiroaki Sano is another recommended PC-98 composer. Marine Rouge and Mirage 2 are both awesome soundtracks -- the ending track of Mirage 2, "Maiden Voyage", is hot saus.

  7. I wonder if Water World Saus is supposed to be Water World South. My knowledge of Japanese is minimal but I believe they do not have the "th" sound. It might have just been a translation goof. Maybe someone who knows Japanese can clear this up.
Great end of the year ep. Looking forward to another year of junz.

  8. It took a long time to put this together; the decisions really are hard to make when distinguishing between each rank. Having to leave the Bomberman Max song off the list as #11 was particularly difficult. Thanks for all the good times with your beautiful podcast!
