Last episode was BONK! This one is BONK! as well.
ReplyDeleteOf course we loved last month’s episode! Put me on to Peg and Steely Dan: I had heard Peg on the radio but never really HEARD it, and now I have a new spotify radio station built from Peg which i’ve dubbed 70s white guy jams. Grab your balls and get out on the floor because Spaceship from Treasure Land Adventure was so bonk.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, Boizz!!! Both Viewpoint and Burning Force have better arcade soundtracks, at least in my opinion. Also great PCE tracks! I remember Nectaris/Military Madness back in the day was a game that made me really wish I had a Turbografx.
ReplyDeleteSecond Samurai prominently used the PSG! I remember Matt Furniss saying in his LMH interview that he didn't use the PSG because he viewed it as having an archaic sound, and then later noticing how certain Japanese composers used it to great effect. Because of that, it makes sense that this was a late composition. Listening to the other tracks on this OST, I can definitely hear Koshiro's Streets of Rage influence.
Lastly, Gigandes.......whooooo boy. That's some bonkness right there.
The jams were tasty, the street fighter was hyper. Thank you legacy music boys.
ReplyDeleteAnother great episode. Question for Rob that I hope he can answer on the podcast. What does he think of the Sonic trailer?
ReplyDeleteLoved the Viewpoint tune... I've just remembered that my arcade machine has Viewpoint, very good shmup.
ReplyDeleteI listened to both eps! Just a busy time so got distracted.
ReplyDeleteThat Human Grand Prix track is the best I've heard in a while. Absolutely love it. I have a feeling I have a guess for Brent's year best list
Yes, the F1 Dream Battle track is truly a dream! And nothing but love for the Mario no Super Picross soundtrack. Straight jams.
ReplyDeleteAnybody else think the Military Madness track sounds like Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule The World"? Especially the little lead-in bit right before it loops, sounds like the last bit of the chorus to me.
ReplyDeleteThat didn't cross my mind, but both pieces do have that shuffle rhythm to them.
DeleteYes - I thought of the same similarity, during the episode
DeleteWhen I heard the Military Madness track "Leave me alone" by Michael Jackson immediately popped into my head.
Delete@ Stefan Good call on describing them as having a shuffle rhythm. I was going to describe it that way but due to my lack of musical knowledge I wasn't sure if that was the correct term. "Leave me alone" also has that rhythm.
I did some further research and both "Leave me alone" and Military madness came out in 1989.
I think the X pronunciation of Faxanadu can be defended, because there are some Greek roots that have a silent letter when they appear at the beginning of English words, but then the silent letter comes to life in other words where the root has a prefix before it. Like the silent P in "pneumonia" is pronounced in "apnea," and the silent M in "mnemonic" is pronounced in "amnesia. So the X could be said to have a silent K sound in "Xanadu" that comes to its full glory when prefixed in "Faxanadu."
ReplyDeleteVery good defense!
DeleteI definitely heard the last episode as I do all episodes. I just don't often have much to say (and I suspect there are others like me, as well).
ReplyDeleteBut this time around I do have something to say: the Human Grand Prix IV track was pretty amazing (and that's saying something, coming from a metal guy :P) I also think it's pretty cool that - after all these years of the podcast - you're still finding tracks like these.
Awww, I got a little upset when you guys bashed kindergarten graduations. My kids both worked really hard on learning their lines for the little plays they put on, and they sang songs and celebrated their first year at school. The jump from kindergarten to 1st grade is a big one, and little ones need to know that their parents are proud of them for what they've done.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it's pronounced "Fazzanadu." Always has, always will. Users who mispronounce it should be sentenced to 3 hours of Time Lord per infraction. ;)
This episode really hit the spot. Man, every track when it came on was just what I needed to hear.
ReplyDeleteThe last episode was good, eps are getting out, at least to me. It might be easier to see new eps if the mixtapes were handled on a separate list/site though. I dunno if maybe the mixtapes are confusing for new users of the podcast.
Are you getting my emails, Brent, Rob? Are they getting out there?
I heard the episode
ReplyDeleteA slight return of the Bront voice this episode!
ReplyDeleteHEY!!! Way late on this, finally listened up to date, but HUGE mistake on 163 racing games 2. The track from "Nigel Mansell's" is NOT from Nigel Mansell etc., it is from Lotus RECS 2 Or it is on BOTH. I dont know. It is my favorite Genesis track ever, so id love to know the story there.

I love this podcast. You guys are the best. It really has given me so much entertainment and even comfort this last year. Thanks for what you do.
ReplyDeleteStill on top boiz! Loved the episode!
ReplyDeleteAlways listening and grooving to every episode here! But usually I don't have much to say. I'd sure like some VGM Karaoke or Mame That Tune in the next episodes, just for a little bit of old time's sake.
