  2. Another great episode as always. I would like to recommend a couple episode themes one would be opening theme music and another would be Nintendo black box only tracks as well as one dedicated to exclusivly final boss battle/final stage music

    1. Ok I take back my black box idea

  3. Great episode again guys! I was wondering if you guys were at all familiar with the Lufia (aka Estopolis) series for SNES. For my money it has some of the best RPG tracks out there.
In case you aren't familiar, here's my favorite track, The Last Duel from the first game. Keep up the great work guys!

  4. Great show, as always, Chiki Chiki Double Dragon BOI - ZZZ (and sister)! Definitely grateful for the aptly timed censor sound, but otherwise, a great time! So I guess I'm officially St. John now? It's funny, on the radio show I'm a part of (A Rebel's Cause Radio), I somehow got stuck with the name Judas, so I'll take St. John. :-)

The highlights of this episode for me were the opening track (That track was way awesome! I almost always love Genesis tracks with a strong PSG), and the NES track with the supplemental sound hardware chip. That does sound very reminiscent of a TG16. A track with a lot of asymetrical pulse wave (I.e. 25% or 75% duty) or prominent triangle wave would've given it away as an NES track. But I don't recall those voices being real prominent here. I quite possibly would've fallen for your trick as well with this track. :-)

Speaking of TG16: I'm still doing the legwork on trying to find out if the TG16 samples waveforms or generates them. Wikipedia page for the CPU/sound chip seems to use sample language, but I think we need to get someone who actually programs / has programmed on actual TG16 hardware to answer this one. I think that's the last piece of info we need before we can say we "get" the TG16 sound system.

Recommend any composers for me to go chasing after? :-)

    -St. John

p.s. I've written a lot between the blogs, and the e-mails on Sega Genesis sound hardware. I'm actually going to try to step that back just a bit, lest someone spring for the obvious joke and start referring to those posts as "The Book of Genesis according to St. John." (Yes, you may file that as a "St. John Handy") :-D

    1. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I meant "Chiki Chiki Ganbare! Double Dragon Golf BOI - ZZZ!" Geez! Where are my manners? :-)

    2. It wasn't an NES track, it was a Famicom track. The Famicom and NES have some slightly different sound hardware.

  5. I have to say, the BOI-ZZZ running gag is one of my favorites. It's up there with Brent being an RPG guy and Rob preferring the Genesis version of SFII over the Super Nintendo one (kidding!!).

This episode was filled to the brim with fun tracks, it's actually tough for me to pick a favorite. I never really had any doubt you guys would make it this far. The diverse track list here is proof of that.

I always thought the TG16 had an interesting sound - sort of between 8 and 16 bit. It almost sounds like FM synthesis when used really well (soundtracks like Super Star Soldier and Detanna!! Twinbee come to mind). I too am very much interested in finding out more about how its sound chip works.

One last thing... About SNES samples, I know how Brent feels. I'm a big fan of Capcom's sound sets for the Mega Man X games as well as their arcade games at the time (like Marvel Super Heroes). Yet, a lot of people seem to hate them. I feel your pain, man!

  6. The Hybrid Front, Moon - Mars ~ Sakurabe Fight BGM 3 it reminds me Streets of Rage, by Yuzo Koshiro. Great sound!
