Episode 185: DJ Douggpound

Rob unfortunately broke his leg and was unable to record this month's episode.  In his absence, guest Doug Lussenhop aka DJ Douggpound joins Brent for some third and fourth generation video game music listening and commenting.  Doug even gets into some VGM Karaoke action at one point.  Doug is a comedian/musician and host of The Poundcast, a comedy podcast of which Brent is the co-host.  Doug also often times collaborates with Brent on projects such as Pound House.  Full track listing below.

  1. Hope Rob has a speedy recovery. Dj Douggpound in the mix! The Mother soundtrack is one of my favs. Here's the version of Pollyanna from the official Mother soundtrack https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vBbRJoHTJAM

  2. Great episode guys; so many cool tracks!

I'm glad you dug Dark Lord, Brent. It's a pretty awesome soundtrack and I'd never heard of it before so I figured it'd be a good idea to suggest it to you guys. I mean Data East, right, how can anyone hate.

Ugh, not to bury you guys in haters, but I have kind of a love-hate relationship with DJ Dougpound. I loved him on The Champs, and Pound House is usually pretty good stuff, but I find him so obnoxious on podcasts sometimes.

He interrupts people constantly, like he's trying too hard to be funny all the time and it can get really grating. Sometimes he'll be interviewing someone and he won't let them talk long enough to actually answer any of the questions he's asking them. Like, he just keeps hammering away at them instead of giving them a chance to answer him fully.

I don't know if he's just super afraid of dead air for some reason or something, but it drives me nuts sometimes, lol. Not to put you on blast here, Doug; I'm not trying to be the sonic blast man here. I usually love a lot of your stuff.

  3. Being funny requires taking risks and I love that kind of comedy. I find Doug endearing because he's not afraid to put himself out there. Don't let this hater put you in the chill zone.

Loved the Multi Play Volleyball track from Keyglyph - a true connoisseur's choice.

    1. Totally agree with Inspector Claw. I love these guys together and laughed out loud at Doug's commentary. "I give it two thumbs on the controller." Thanks to these two goofs I've been saying "There is no need" like it means something.

Looking forward to the next regular episode with Rob F but this one was great. Time Lord is the gift that keeps on giving.

    2. Hey look, don't get me wrong. Doug was really funny on this podcast. I'll be asking everyone to "let me put my drums" on tracks for a while.

  4. I love that this podcast is still going strong! Definitely one of my go-to casts, unlike Rob's go-from cast on his leg (get well soon, Switch!). I only wish you all were still doing these weekly. How about every two weeks? You guys are funny and weird and cool and I have been exposed to more awesome 3rd and 4th generation music than I ever imagined existed, so thank you. Also thanks for filling in, Doug, but I really missed Rob this week - it's been too long since we've had a timely cast release - and here's hoping Rob also has a timely cast release. Keep up the good work - Chiki Chiki Boyzzzzzzz!

  6. Great episode. It was cool hearing an outsider perspective on the podcast. For the record, I don't really want to hear an episode dedicated to Generation 1 and 2 music. I was smiling through the entire episode, but really enjoyed hearing that candy excitement.

When is there going to be another shorties episode?

    Get better, Rob!

  7. Good episode. I've always wondered what Dougpound would be like on this podcast and it's cool to know it worked out so well. It's a weird mixing of worlds, though I've known you guys were buddies for a while, as I loved The Champs esp. when he was on them in the beginning.

The music on this episode was really good too, during the Double Dragon 2 track I had the thought "Man this is a track you could play to sum up the NES sound" Not that there aren't better tracks maybe, just like that is the most NES sounding track I can think of at the moment.

    1. Agreed. The bassline + base tone is so NES, right?

  8. good though!

I love the fact that Brent gets to choose most of the tracks in those rare episodes without Rob. The other dude is just a guest and does not get these kinds of privileges. That's good. Brent always has great tracks.

    Also:

This episode saved my ass in that it reminded me in just the right moment (on a bike trip back from work) that the next day was some sort of personal anniversary between me and my wife by talking about the nast remark on the Valentine's episode.

Again I was reminded of the fact that the Legacy Music Hour is the best podcast in the world and that I owe the show a great deal.

  9. Douggpound's take on Pollyanna was so funny omg. Totally sounds like a church song. I think its because of the drum part lol.

  10. Hey! This was my first time listening to the podcast (only just found out about it natch) and I gotta say, I am in /love/ with it already. An hour and a half of just really chill appreciation and playing of video game music from probably the best time period for it (though there's something to be said about Echochrome's soundtrack). Doug was great tbh, the pair's little chat about what counts or not cleared up similar questions I had about it when I first heard about this thing. That, and also these two just have great chemistry no matter what. Hope Rob gets better soon also! Now then, time venture into listening to the backlog for a while methinks - Peace! <3

  12. I love your show. I have an idea for a theme for you: Winter Themes

Many games have the typical water level, underground level, winter level, desert level and you can make show for each one!

Here is my favorite winter track to get your started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWhXqU5keJA

  13. I know you guys talked about doing a desert-themed show, which would be great. There's an awesome "Desert" track from a Super Famicom game called Shin Seikoku: La Wares.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSdVZlfUqWY

It kind of reminds me of Twin Peaks...if Twin Peaks was set in some northwestern Japanese village.

I know you've played a lot of great forest themes already but I think a forest-themed episode should happen sometime in the future. There's so many good tunes -- "Devil Forest" from Last Bible III is a favorite of mine. The forest them from Hyper Iria is also quite the jam.

Doug seemed into a lot of the music and I enjoyed his commentary on some of the tracks. You just need to keep a big bowel of Halloween candy in the studio if he returns to the show.

  14. There's always going to be blasting. People love to put things on such. But I'll conquer with majority of comments here. I loved Doug Pound on this ep. PREACH. PREACH. PREACH!!! Actually I'd love to see Rob, Doug, and Brent team up for an episode. Possibly a debate style episode. Either on the L.M.H. or the Poundcast. Let's get a reciprocal cross over happening. Brent against Doug with Rob as judge and jury. DOOOOoooooooo eet! Xoxo. That's right! I just virtually hugged and kissed y'all. Even all the commenters. Y'all got snugged. Y'all got smooched!
