The song from Ys 5 sounds really reminiscent of the track Pirates Ahoy from Final Fantasy V. Not like it's a complete ripoff but it seems like they were listening to it a lot when making the Ys trac

Definitely hear the similarities. Makes me want to shout "New mon!"
DeleteCombatribes was released on the SNES, but the SFC version shows blood in the cinema screens.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with the games, guys!
Any other users played MegaTurrican? The soundtrack is awesome and actually better than the SNES Turrican games, in my opinion. And that's coming from a SNES guy.
Any other users
Weird.
DeleteFirst of amazing episode as to LMH :) I'm an avid user ever since I first heard the Sunsoft episode, but I wasnt able to participate in the boards because I was abit too shy, I decided to gather up courage to post this tho. :)
DeleteThat PowerMitt is sick man. Where'd you get it? I'm actually very envious of Rob. :D
I plan to play MegaTurrican soon, I used to have MS-DOS copy of the game, but it never really clicked to me. Is there any other Turrican titles I should try if this didnt click as well?
As for the games. Those are some amazing picks. I think LMH will enjoy Goof Troop. I havent tried Toejam and Earl but I think its a very similar game. :)
Mega Turrican is awesome! The software scaling/rotation effects come off much better than the ones used in Super Turrican, though the one's used in Super Turrican 2 are much better than both games. And yes, that music in Mega Turrican is to die for!
DeleteThe Power Mitt is from FanGamer. They have tons of cool, specialty game related things. ( http://www.fangamer.net/ ) They are probably most well known for their Earthbound / Mother stuff, including a hard cover Mother 3 guide that very much resembles the style of the old Earthbound guide. Its really neat.
DeleteI've played Super Turrican and it was pretty good. I really just enjoyed Mega Turrican a lot more for some reason. Its such a great game. However, I'm pretty crap at it, so that was another reason I sent it to LMH. :)
That awesome part in " Continental Shelf" reminds me of Madonna when she sings "over the borderline..." in the song "Borderline". Great track! Love how the little bells follow right after that melody too.
ReplyDeleteHaven't had a chance to listen to this episode yet, but I've been really wanting to throw out some random requests, so.........
ReplyDeleteStar Voyager - NES - Title Screen - 1986: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB4rTMv3O5I
This song is so bare, and yet so complete at the same time. It has no rhythm track, the bass line is the rhythm. It uses no vibrato, or other "tricks" to make its statement, yet it comes off as very rich sounding to me. It has a wonderful section towards the end where it sound very nostalgic, perhaps even sentimental. It reminds me of an old wind up music box. It's just so full of feeling, and to me, and I'm just amazed at how much was made using so little.
Das Geheimnis der Happy Hippo - Game Boy Color - Title Screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkYC9AhMLgw
Yes, I know, I know.... Game Boy Color is breaking your rules, but PLEASE consider this for a "Beyond 16-bit" episode. It pushes the Game Boy sound chip farther than possibly anything else out there! Plus, the melody, is so freaking charming! You just HAVE to be happy when you hear it. The C64 style arpeggio effects swirl around your head, and increase the happiness by factors untold!
Snatcher - Sega CD - Pleasure Of Tension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeUbRd3eIeY
I feel that you guys are really missing out, by not looking into some of the early cd based stuff. This game has its entire soundtrack produced by the Genesis synth chips, with the exception on the opening, and closing tracks. This song is my favorite. It's just so menacing, yet "awesome cop show", at the same time.
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood OST Track #12 - PC Engine CD - Boss Opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG_TQ7Dofk0
This cd game is all redbook audio, except for this one track. Its just so freaky, and really sets the tone for the boss fight, which is just behind the exit door of the room that you are currently in. The wild vibrato effects really drive home the fact that you are in a nightmare scenario.
Mario Paint Brings back some fond memories. You guys always have the best picks. =)
