Back in Episode 36, Kinuyo Yamashita, famed composer for the original Castlevania, spoke with Brent and Rob as part of her very own LMH focus. Her interview is worth revisiting not only for her insights into her profession, but for some breaking news that surprised even the boizz! Whether you check that out now or later, don't forget to enjoy this mixtape of pure, distilled Yamashita music.

Sometimes things get so hectic in the middle of a running and shooting game that it's difficult to focus on the music. Let this mixtape take the lead and escort you through a stress-free tour of the tunes, much like your older siblings or cousins used to when you were still learning the ropes as Player 2.

Episode 169: Best Of Year In Review 4
Another year comes to an end and as usual, Brent and Rob countdown their TOP TEN favorite video game music tracks of the year (Episodes 158 through 168). To be more specific, Brent counts down his top ten favorite tracks while Rob makes it clear that all of his tracks are number ones. Tracks selected for this episode are only pieces the boizz became aware of within the last two years (during the year hiatus and last 11 episodes) and that were played on the podcast. Rob also tells an exciting story about a brawl he got into recently in Port Town. Note: The “perfect” soundbyte is a bleep, used for censoring. Bringing in year five with some action -the action of Rob completely falling asleep during the last quarter of the episode. Another note: Please excuse and be prepared for how boring Brent sounds when talking about computer music during the beginning of the episode. Partial track listing below.

The Hudson Soft focus is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Like a trail mix of wacky and delicious flavors, this setlist definitely hits the spot.

LMH Mixtape #31: Shorties
Welcome to one of the weirdest Legacy Music Hour mixtapes you'll ever listen to. A "shorty" is any tune that is approximately ten seconds long: think menu screens, opening fanfares, completion jingles, and so on. Because of their brevity, more than forty tracks get featured in each shorties episode. Now you can listen to the first batch in one unrelenting rush, like some kind of quirky, catchy boss parade.

Episode 167: Computer Game Music
For years, the boizz have avoided a whole faction of game music that is somewhat similar to video game music, but also quite different: computer game music. Often times, people think that VGM and CGM are the same thing, but they're not exactly, and the Legacy Music Hour was created to showcase video game music, particularly from the 8-bit and 16-bit era. But, for this one time only episode, Brent and Virtua Rob (the boizz are back) finally take a journey through music from games for the Commodore 64, Macintosh, PC, and more, and also stay fairly close to the time period that coincides with the third and fourth generation of video games. So to mark Rob's new form, here's a very unusual edition of the Legacy Music Hour. Full track listing below.

LMH Mixtape #28: Sonic the Hedgehog
Writing the usual sort of unbiased third-person introduction was almost impossible for KeyGlyph this week. Why is that, you ask? Because for her -- as well as countless other gamers -- the music from the Sonic the Hedgehog series holds some of the nearest and dearest spots in her VGM-loving heart. This mixtape may send you through loop-de-loops of nostalgia, or it may take you to previously unknown zones; either way, there's simply no denying that the LMH Sonic the Hedgehog focus was way past cool.

LMH Mixtape #25: Nobuo Uematsu
Brent has occasionally referred to Nobuo Uematsu as "the John Williams of video game music" for good reason. Uematsu's incredible work with the Final Fantasy series has earned him fans all over the world, and not just among dedicated video game hobbyists. For this composer focus the boizz compiled a setlist with two distinct phases (or forms): the first is a chronological survey of Uematsu's music, and the second is a less structured collection of favorite selections. Enjoy them both!

LMH Mixtape #24: Punching and Kicking
Brent and Rob created the "punching and kicking" category to focus on titles that involved pummeling your enemies but which were not classified as straight-up fighting games. This flexible definition would cause some controversy in later installments (see "The Kabuki Quantum Fighter Discussion" and "The Shatterhand Incident" of Episode 92; see also "The Live Shatterhand Debate" of Episode 100) -- but after the dust settles, the result is always some grade-A jams.

LMH Mixtape #21: Jeff van Dyck
Jeff van Dyck's music is some of the most instantly recognizable in 16-bit gaming, and for Episode 21, the boizz invited him on the air to explain why. Jeff graciously accepted and dropped some serious knowledge about Super Nintendo and Genesis hardware, how their strengths and limitations affected his compositions, and whether or not he thinks his tunes have held up over time. After you enjoy this skitchin' mix be sure to check out Jeff's current projects at www.jeffvandyck.com, because this guy is still doing awesome stuff!
NOTE TO THE DETAIL-ORIENTED: In the original episode, a track from NBA Live 96 was played, which was actually composed by a different composer (Jeff pointed this out to Brent and Rob after the podcast was released), so that track was not included in this mix.

LMH Mixtape #18: Hirokazu Tanaka
Episode 18 made LMH history by featuring the first interview with a legendary VGM composer. The focus was on none other than Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka, who had graciously agreed to answer questions by e-mail. Brent and Rob re-enacted the interview on the air in between their selected tracks, with Rob playing the part of the dignified Tanaka-san and Brent playing the roles of both boizz. The original episode is definitely worth another listen, both for Tanaka-san's insight and Brent's Rob impression.
NOTE TO THE DETAIL-ORIENTED: The track from Mario Paint was not composed by Hirokazu Tanaka, but he was the musical director on that game, and so that track was included in this mix.

LMH Mixtape #17: Puzzle Games
Just as the puzzle genre covers a surprisingly broad range of topics (falling blocks, wandering rodents, time-traveling vikings), so do the games' soundtracks serve up a great deal of musical variety. Rock, classical, new age, funk, hip-hop, and even industrial nightmare fuel find their place in this highly eclectic mixtape.
