Episode 172: Free Play 24

Brent and Rob bring in the neo year (the world’s neo year, not the LMH neo year) with another free play of great video game music.  Brent is sick, but sounds sicker than he actually is, so beware that there is a lot of throat clearing, coughing, and sniffling.  Sorry, the Legacy Music Hour hopes this isn’t too disgusting.  Also, Brent’s brothers, Max and Nicky, who were in town for the holidays, sit in to help comment and discuss and count time signatures.  Also, also, Rob and Brent open up a bunch of user submitted Christmas gifts (these gifts weren’t late, the boys just wanted to save them for the episode), so thank you to Joseph B. and KeyGlyph for the excitement and fun.  Full track listing below.

  3. If one isn't paying attention to the subtle differences in voice and the snot, this episode kind of sounds like there's three Brents in the house. TripleBrent= hilarious. wonderful episode as always!

    1. Yeah, that was a really funny moment. I've totally counted like that when listening to weird fusion tracks. I counted it out, and I agree it was definitely 7/8.

  5. I'm probably just watching too many Charlie Brown holiday specials but the base line on that Grand Prix track reminds of the main Peanuts theme

  7. 2 of my wishes were granted this episode: the Ballz track was a callback to the "Funny" episode while the Kid Dracula ending brought back the Western voices of Boss Bach and Switch the Kid. Yee haw!

    Glad that you guys liked "Overture" from Tengai Makyou Zero: Far East of Eden. Its one of my favorites from this soundtrack. One of the things that sold me on this track is the interesting echo percussion that starts at 1:23, which reminds me of "Emperor of balladry"'s percussion that sounds like horse hooves clacking. I'm sucker for interesting percussion. This soundtrack's sound design reminds me of something that Hitoshi Sakimoto would do. The quality is incredible. Just listen to the echo effect used in "Born with a Sword, Dead by a Sword" and "Tangible Fear". After hearing this episode, I re-listened to this soundtrack again and dare I say it - my soundtrack of the year has changed again. Such a gem of a soundtrack. - Slick Vic

    I have to say, I really liked all the emotions Rob brought to my letters. And Brent killed it on the riddles.

    I'm also amused that the wrapping paper got a mention. The Bach Brothers are pretty adorable.

    I wonder if we'll get the whole family sometime in a future episode?

  10. since my question was a bit tough, its only fair that I answer it as well. I originally was going to choose "Battletoads", since I haven't won it cleanly and its David Wise music.. nuff said. But I would probably end up throwing the controller into the TV screen in frustration.
    So in order to tackle this question I figure I need a game that has enough variables to keep me entertained and thats a shooter. Even if you beat it once, you have other factors to keep playing it.
    - various difficulty levels
    -score attack aka beating your score
    - various power ups
    -trying to finish a game on 1 ship/ 1 continue

    As for the game- I would choose "Gradius 3".
    -Iconic soundtrack
    -and Edit Mode adds to the replay factor

  11. Awesome to get mentioned! I pronounce my name the second way Brent said it, like "steppin'" with an F sound in the middle instead of a P.

    I thought the "hold her hoof" question was tough, as you guys came up with that during "New Horse" from Jumpin' Derby, but also said it during Keiba Eight Special 2. But the stipulation that it would be a track you sang along with rules out "New Horse," so I won't cry foul.

    It was cool to hear the Weinbach bros work out a time signature; usually when Brent comments on it, it's a throwaway remark that doesn't lead to any further discussion. Other tracks you've played where I've noticed a time signature in 7 are the first Märchen Maze track Rob played back in episode 3, and the Thunder Blade track in in Flying and Shooting 3. I'm sure I've noticed it other times on the show, but these two are the ones I remember.
