Episode 195: Brent’s Recent Games

For Episode 195, Brent picks tracks he only recently discovered by playing through the actual games.  Gabe also blesses the boys with various gifts due to this being the Christmas episode.  Rob accidentally comes up with a new expression to describe things that are bonk.  Trevor accidentally ruins a surprise for himself.  And there’s a big debate about if a track played on the show is legal or not.  Brent also plays a message Rob left on his answering machine, a name-that-tune situation which you can guess for yourself in comments section below.  NOTE: In case there is any confusion, during Rob’s phone message, there’s a video game sound effect which was put in during the editing of this episode in order to censor a bad word Rob said during the message.  That is, it wasn’t a sound effect Rob left while recording the message.  Full track listing below.

  2. The Legacy Music Hour is my favorite podcast! The music selection is full of hidden gems and has piqued my interest in a lot of games! Brent´s recent pickups are kinda pricey! How do you get games for a reasonable price? Only ebay patience?

P.S What do you think about the Gargoyles Quest ost for the game boy?

Thanks and keep up the Bonkers Town Work!

  3. Awesome episode guys! It's town alright! Love the appearance of more Dean Evans tracks. Such an underated composer. Also, the composer of Brainlord would be an awesome focus. I found a podcast that featured some more songs from the game. I recommend them, Pixeled Audio. Anyway, great podcast from the Boizz once again!

    1. Yes, please do a Masanao Akahori focus! Cybernator is one of my favorite soundtracks! His SNES music (unsure if he composed on other systems) has a consistent sound, which seems very positive and uplifting.

  4. Can't believe it's been 3 years since the LMH resurrection!

  5. Rob and Brent, read all of Dean's comments on the six Green Lantern tracks he posted to YouTube. He says he recorded these right out of the SNES, just like Rob mentioned. He also talks about Ocean finding out a lot of hidden tricks for the sound chip near the end of their time developing for the system.

As to why he says there is no ROM for the game, check out the history of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG3ZA98GCMA

The short version is that Dean got brought on when they decided to completely restart the game from scratch. Shortly afterwards, the project got canned.

    1. Brent contacted him and he said it was actually recorded from the SNES dev kit and he cleaned the track up a bit afterwards as well. So it's not exactly what you would have heard in-game.

    2. So I'm still on the fence on this one.....okay, it's true and established fact that the GL tracks are technically not legal by LMH definition....I take full responsibility for leading Rob down that road to perdition. But going back and listening to the tracks and reading Dean's comments to Rob and listening to episode 195 again, I think Brent and Gabe MIGHT be overstating the differences.

The tracks were played off a devkit, which uses SNES sound hardware. From what Dean said on YouTube and from what you guys mentioned about your correspondence, Dean removed the background hiss from the recordings that was coming off the devkits. That's it. While that does count as "processing", it's debateable how much different the result would be vs. an actual .spc file, which would have none of that added hiss. Probably the closest we'll get to knowing would be to take Dean up on his suggestion to Rob, and compare the Waterworld tracks on his YouTube page to the .spc versions. Dean said he used the exact process to create those Waterworld tracks as the GL tracks, and they were all composed and created about the same time.

At the end of the day, I partly agree with Brent and Gabe, but I want to believe Dean and Rob. The Waterworld OST is one of my top 5 for the SNES, and GL is in the same vein. But the samples have a little bit of shimmer, as if they were recorded and played back at a higher sample rate, and the reverb is smoother and cleaner than any other track I've heard on the SNES. That's why I recommended the tracks to Rob; Dean had seemingly pulled off an audio quality that we had not quite heard on the SNES. It's now unclear whether he in fact has(and even if he hasn't, it's still as good as the best SNES audio out there), but I want to believe.

  7. This episode was so good you guys!

First of all, whenever we get episode photos of Brent wearing his jacket it makes me feel less alone in the world as a person who is permanently jacketed indoors and out for half of the year. Thank you for the solidarity.

Secondly, Rob's Name that Chune is from JPtAG. (I don't want to type it out in full and spoil it for anyone else playing.) Took me a few listens to get! Might've been easier with a second singer providing that amazing bassline.

  9. Wow. That Kirby's Dream Land 3 track (Iceberg) was absolutely not what I was expecting out of a Kirby game! That was some seriously ambitious drill n bass, which was very cutting edge and aggressive music back then. I was glad that Gabe mentioned Squarepusher, because it sounds very much like him. The acid basslines in Iceberg particularly sound like Squarepusher's track Square Rave. I went to the trouble of cueing up the relevant sections in some YouTube videos for anyone who wants to hear the similarities:

    Squarepusher: Square Rave

    Kirby's Dreamland 3: Iceberg

I also wanted to add that the yabba dabba doos had me laughing out loud in this episode. Great show guys!

  10. Also, Brent, I think the Gods track might be reminding you of an Aphex Twin track. I've been trying to find the right one, which is hard because he usually gives his tracks nonsense names that are impossible to remember. The closest I have come up with is "On", though I don't feel solid that this is the track I am thinking of quite yet. Again, here is a side-by-side comparison:

    1. I had a feeling there was a different Aphex Twin track I was thinking of. This one is closer to the Gods high score tune. You can see why I couldn't remember the track name...

  11. For the Ys track "Tower of the Shadow of Death", Rob played a different version of the exact same track 7 years ago, in 2010. This was on the first elevator music episode. It was actually the Turbo CD version, which would normally be off-limits, based on the rules of the show.

    1. Yes, another user brought this to our attention as well via email. The breach of legality will be addressed on the next episode.

    2. I propose LMH has exceeded the statute of limitations and no negative consequences should be exacted on Rob F Switch for playing the Turbo CD version of the song.

  12. The 310 user was me (I thought I left my name in the message!), and of course you're right, it was Kid Niki. I didn't expect it to be challenging; I just thought it would be simple and fun to sing as a message.

    2. I remember my parents took me to some party at an unfamiliar house when I was a kid, and I played SNES with some kids I didn't know. That was one of the games there, and I thought it was funny that the Toyota jingle was in there, and sang along, and I think the other kids were amused by it.

  15. Great episode, loved a lot of the music and it made me want to play a bunch of these games. A surprisingly high amount of games I had'n't heard of. (Brain Lord, Devilish, the SNES Flintstones, Gods)

Also I realized I haven't commented in a while Still one of the greatest podcasts ever and I listn to every episode :)

  16. Thanks for playing my karaoke track. It's a little embarrassing listening to it compared to some of the higher production values on the other submissions. But sometimes driving in your car inspires a bad early 90's love song.

    1. Hey Brennan! It put a smile to my face. ^_^

The high production karaokes are great, but I have love for the simpler ones too because they are just so relatable and loveable.

This is a good time to mention, I recently started a SoundCloud page called VGM Karaoke Lounge where I'm asking anyone who has been featured on Legacy MUsic Hour or VGM Karaoke Lounge to submit their mp3s to me to host them on the SoundCloud. I would love to have you join (and anyone else reading this who has had a showcased VGMKaraoke). Send an mp3 of your karaoke to jungletoads@yahoo.com

And everybody, check out the Lounge!

  18. Oh man, I was walking in the park next to my house, listening to this episode and as soon as Rob threw out that "yaba daba daba daba do" I lost it. I'll never be able to hear that song the same way again.

  19. Almost caught up! Just one episode behind. So my favorite 16bit ost is shinobi 3 and I am hoping will be hearing some tracks since Gabe got brent this game. The last and only time one of this game track was played was in the ninja games episode. Shinobi 3 is also my favorite side scroller.
