  1. Happy New Year to LMH and all the users! And hello to Studio Mike! Sorry for the slight confusion Brent with my mixtape comment that you mentioned in the opener - the January bit was a misnomer. Basically, the 110th mixtape coming up on the 22nd is Free Play 11 which sort of links numerically with this episode, the 220th. 110=22=11=220. I just thought that was a funny coincidence of numbers and their doubles/or halves. Of course, this episode comes out on 01/01/2020 as well - all ones and twos, indeed. Umm... I'm guess what I'm trying to say is: did you read that comment? Well, THIS one's better... (by the way, "good" shout out to beloved user Anonymous, intentional or not!)

Re: TOU-John, that's short for The Other User John (I know there's been other John's before me) but it's also a nod to a certain beloved Sega Genesis character. Maybe I should add "& URL" afterwards too to make the reference clearer - in fact, here's one that would have gone well with this episode's topic...

    1. So, I absolutely love number coincidences and such, and get this: there's more. My birthday is November 22nd.

      11/22.

      What does it all mean?!?!

  2. That last track from the Great Battle V is soooooooooo Chrono. I was just checking the dates, CT it was released on March and TGBV was released on December. The composers could be doing a tribute to Chrono's Theme. I can't stop resembling that tune... It has some sort of the same Movements during the track.

    Who knows...

  3. Hi, here comes a question for Rob: So I regularly play Mario and DKC on the Classic SNES with my 5 and 2 year old girls. Today the older one wanted to play the Street Fighter that's on there. I think it is SF 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting. I have never played any of the SFs. The girls loved it and beat the shit out of each other and me. Question is this: Can you, as basically the high priest of SF, sanction this kind of game for a 5 year old (let alone the 2 year old) and on the other hand, is this version of SF2 even good enough to be played by modern kids or should I rather try to load the original SF2 onto the device? So the first part of the question is asked by me as a parent and caretaker and the second part is me trying to make sure that the kids are confronted with the real deal. Thanks for your wisdom.

  4. Day 0 user here from way back in 2010. I only rarely have something to contribute to the discussion though.

When it comes to VGM inspiring pop music, I can think of two related stories.

The first one is the Sonic 3 ending music, which sounds a lot like Stranger in Moscow from Michael Jackson. It is even mentioned on the Wikipedia page for the song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_in_Moscow. Reason is that Brad Buxer apparently wrote the song when they were working on Sonic 3 and later they adapted it into a full song for Michael.

The second one is not really VGM, but chiptunes: Timbaland as producer for Nelly Fuartado famously stole music from a chip tune artist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timbaland_plagiarism_controversy

I am sure there are more stories if one would go out and dig a bit.

As for the episode, I have a piece of criticism: I felt Mike was overbearing in this episode and set the direction for discussion too often, up to a point where Rob felt more like a guest and less like a host - for example he did not have time to tell his PS4 stories, which I would have loved to hear. I'd prefer if Mike could take a page out of Trevors and Gabes book and be more support than lead.

  5. Hi LMH, and happy New Year! I've listened to LMH for a few months now but this is my first time posting. I can't think of any pop songs inspired by VGM, but I can think of a rap by song and I just have to mention it. The song is "Never Been" by Wiz Khalifa, and it samples Schala's Theme from Chrono Trigger. In fact the term "samples" may be a bit generous; the song is pretty much Wiz Khalifa rapping over the CT track. What's more, the same artist later released another track, "Never Been Part 2 (II)" which also samples Chrono Trigger (this time the sampled track is the Secret of the Forest though).

These tracks just sound so odd to me, and I find it hilarious that a popular rapper would sample VGM so shamelessly. Links to both are below, have a great week!

P.S. My first name is also Brent!

  7. Happy New Year, guys! Nice first episode of the season. Long time listener, but I think this is the first time commenting.

As fun as explosive movements are, my interest was really piqued by the mentions of Greig and Rossini, and the word "movement" in relation to music always makes me think of classical. I actually recently guested on another VGM podcast on that very topic.

I'm curious what you guys think/know of the influence of classical tunes on VGM. Holst's "Mars" from The Planets has influenced a lot of modern music - pop, film, and game - and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" was the basis of the theme from Planet Hell in Earthworm Jim, but there are plenty of other examples I can't call to mind. But what about you guys?

Keep up the good work. You were my first VGM 'cast, and even though I listen to 12 or 13 on the reg now, you guys always move up in the queue when you drop an episode!

    Also - hi, keyglyph!!

  8. Happy new year! long time user but very rarely comment.

In regards to the VGM/pop music discussion. Ever since I was a kid I've always thought Good life by Inner city sounds just like this one streets of rage 2 track. At least part of it, i'll post some links down below.

Streets of rage 2 track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC-B3Q0cRrY
    Inner citty track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUwfOOdg4eE

Also I really wanted to ask if you have plans for any more New age focused episodes at some point? I know you guys don't really do themed episodes as such anymore but those new age ones you did years ago are hands down my favorite . If you ever consider doing another one you would have one happy user! I've listed to those previous new age episodes so many times now I have to give them a break for a while! I could literally recite everything the two of you say in between tracks on those episodes from memory, sorry if that sounds creepy.

Anyway here's to another year of LMH and great VGM tunes. Thanks for everything you do!

  9. Love the episode! Actually was wondering if there was a mistake in mentioning the guest, but think Mike is a welcome addition and enjoy his insight along with the “Gabriel Interjection.” I would definitely be willing to donate to some sort of Patreon for the podcast as well. Some ideas for extra content: Brent’s piano collections (maybe one track a month), extra Vgm karaokes, maybe some shot comedic video based on the “theme,” Time lord horror stories?

  10. Brent, Crusader of Centy is definitely a game for you. From all action rpgs that I know, it has probably the best and most fun gameplay. I'd use an emulator (maybe a dedicated machine, like a raspberry pi), because 300 bucks for any game is too much.
